T-Baum 2010

We put up our tree last weekend. We are real tree people. I have always been adamant about having a real tree. I love the smell and how each one is different and special. Over the past few years I’ve noticed that I always get a lingering cold at Christmas time that mysteriously disappears as soon as we take down the tree. Smart person that I am, I have deduced that I’m probably allergic to the darn thing. I made one weak try to talk to my family about possibly going the fake tree route this year but it didn’t work. We are real tree people and we’re not going to change. I’m just taking extra allergy medicine and it seems to be working so far. Someone I work with told me a story about her friend who always got really sick at Christmas time. Ever since he was a young boy he would get so ill that he would have to spend the holidays laying in his bed with a fever and flu. His parents felt bad that he always missed the holiday festivities sick in bed so as a special treat they started putting a small Christmas tree in his room. It wasn’t until he was an adult many years later that he learned that he was highly allergic to pine trees.

We’ve been having a good holiday so far. My mom is feeling a lot better. She’s had two rounds of chemo so far and the pain in her leg is gone. There have been many other side effects and times when she’s really suffered but for now she’s stable. She’s going to have another CT scan next week and the doctor expects to see that the mass has gotten measurably smaller. This is all good news!! My daughter is in her standard holiday mode. She’s dreaming of all the presents she’ll get at Christmas and then for her birthday 2 weeks later. Though this year she has really gotten into picking out her own gifts to give to others which makes me happy. We’re trying (I mean, I’m trying) to not go too too crazy with the gifts for her this year. I hope that she likes what Santa brings! She still believes in Santa though I’m sure she has her doubts. However, she has told me that Rudolph is definitely a myth. No red nosed reindeer is pulling the wool over her eyes anymore. Santa is going to be very good to me this year. We are getting a new oven TOMORROW! I have been without a working oven for just about 4 years now. Mr Awesome has been truly awesome getting the kitchen ready for our newest appliance. Yesterday he moved a heating duct from its original position underneath the old cooktop to a new location right by the kitchen table. This involved cramming his almost 6′ body into the filthy crawlspace underneath the kitchen floor to detach and reattach the hvac piping. He grumbled and groaned his way through it but he got it done. I love my guy!!! I can’t wait to start some holiday baking. I especially want to make some brown butter cookies that are the most delicious things ever. I’ll let you know how it goes.

I always take pictures of our tree but they just don’t do the original justice. I set up the camera to take a little video of the trimming activities. I thought that we could speed it up and reverse it and have a fun little movie. However, once I started my editing process in imovie ’09 I started running into a problem with the audio. Somehow the audio tracks  from the footage were finding their way into the movie even after I had muted and in some cases deleted them. Since I’m totally bonkers and get obsessed with little projects while I ignore the million other things I need to be doing I have spent the last week working on my 2 minute video. Apparently there is some bug in this version of imovie that doesn’t allow you to completely get rid of audio tracks on clips that you’ve used custom settings to speed up or slowed down. I fixed it by going back in and re-edited all my clips to the preset speeds. I hope that you enjoy it!

This is my 201st post. On TV they always make a big deal when a show reaches its 100th episode. I feel like I should have a big party with a sheet cake and a bouncy house. We’ll all just have to use our imaginations. It is mid-summer yet it feels like fall will be here before we know it. Camp ends in a couple of weeks and then it will be back to the old grind. The old grind is pretty much the same as the current grind, just with homework. I guess this post will just be a list of all the things that I’ve been thinking about lately.

We’ve been enjoying the Summer Reading Program at our local Library. Piper’s been reading constantly in the hopes of earning prizes. She hasn’t read as many books this year as she’s done in the past but more than half of them were 100 pages or more. She reads a lot anyway but this summer she’s been making a special effort. We even discovered some new books in our quest to find some new stuff to read. We started reading The Secrets of Droon series and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. The Droon books are a bit of a Harry Potter/Magic Treehouse rip off but we’ve really been enjoying them. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid books are really funny. They remind me of an older, male Junie B. Jones. She  enjoys reading them to us which I love.

I was doing a lot of reading this summer too and it’s been great. I’ve read:

Open by Andre Agassi
Somewhere Inside by Laura and Lisa Ling
Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs
The Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick
The Indifferent Stars Above by Daniel James Brown

Out of all of them I’d have to say that The Heart of the Sea was my favorite. It is about the Nantucket Whaleship Essex that was rammed and sunk by a whale in the middle of Pacific Ocean and was Melville’s inspiration for Moby Dick.  The crew escaped in three small whaleboats and traveled thousands of miles before they were finally rescued. Alas, now my reading has taken a back seat because I’ve started making things again.

My newest obsession!

I saw a pattern for these animals that I thought were cute. I’ve changed up the original pattern and I’m loving how they look. They are knitted and I’m enjoying knitting again. It has a much cleaner flatter finish than crochet.  Of course now I can’t stop myself from jumping into full production mode. I’m on my fourth one already. Piper asked if I could make one for each of her counselors at camp. We’ll see how far I get. I’m not sure if these will end up on etsy or not. We think the one on the right looks like Nigel our dear kitty. The one on the left is going to be a bunny. What do you think?

I heard this story on the radio the other day and it really made me angry. In a nutshell some psychiatrists have decided to remove the “bereavement exclusion” from their definition of major depression. They now seem to be saying that if you experience depression as a result of grief over the loss of a loved one and this depression lasts for more than two weeks it passes into clinical depression which is considered a disorder and should be “treated”. Why can’t you be sad over the loss of a loved one? If you can’t grieve mightily over the loss of your child what are you allowed to be really sad about? I think that the grief process helps the griever to process the loss. Depression is normal in these situations. Why do they want to make it go away?

Have I mentioned to you dear Internets that I loathe flip-flops. Am I alone in this? I feel like I am. They are not shoes yet people treat them like they are. I have a pair but I try to only use them in the house. Personally, I don’t like looking at my toes and flip-flops are all about the toes. Maybe I should loosen up a bit . . . nah, I hate the damn things and I’m not afraid to say it.

How did I manage that?

I had two different wordpress windows open at the same time and managed to erase all trace of today’s post about being a plongeur. Drats!!!!

Fanny Doodle loves the Tooth Fairy but doesn’t like Santa Claus

I’m on those Fanny Doodles again. The other night at dinner I started talking to P about Fanny Doodles. It took her a while (and a bit of help from me) but she finally figured out the trick. I remember watching Zoom and really concentrating on why Fanny liked certain things but didn’t like others. It took me a really long time to get it. I guess I’m dense. I like that they didn’t come out and say what the logic was, you had to figure it out for yourself. Children’s TV is so different now.

The hats are now on ebay and etsy. I’ve sold two to total strangers and I’m trying to figure out ways to increase those sales. I inadvertantly purchased two etsy showcase spots for my panda dolls for next weekend. I hope that my $14 won’t be in vain. If anything someone will notice them and click through to see what else I may have. I’m making a custom hat for my coworker’s daughter and have several promised purchases from other friends. My parents are volunteering to do a craft fair out where they live in December for me. I’d better get cracking making them plenty of stuff for them to sell!! I don’t think that I’ll be doing the craft show with them. I feel a little guilty about it and then I really don’t. I’m going to trust them to do a good job and if they don’t I really haven’t lost anything anyway. I also sent a box of hats to my friend Mark to sell at his store in the East Village. Now that is exciting!! I can’t wait to see how they do. I’ll keep you posted.

Caps for Sale!

A couple of weekends ago I went running. I really didn’t want to that day and really had to drag myself out to the trail. I’m glad that I did because I came up with lots of good ideas while I was out there. I have been wanting to make something that people could really use and I started thinking about an idea for a hat/headband thingy. I like making the panda faces the best and thought I could stick one on a flower and stick it on a hat. When I got home I found my chunky crochet hooks and started playing around with shapes and flowers. They are very quick to make and I am really enjoying the fashion design aspect of them. I also really like seeing P model them. She seems to like wearing them or maybe she’s just humoring me.

Stealthy Me

P caught a glimpse of Lucille here on my Flickr page the other day. The image was very small thankfully. She could make out that it was a doll and immediately started asking me to make her one. She even found a bunch of yarn she thought I could use to “sew it” together. I said that I thought that it might take me a while (she has no idea) to make something like that and she said that she was fine with waiting all day if necessary.

Introducing my new fiance . . . .

snowmanIsn’t he a dreamboat? I am so proud of the way this came out I just had to show you. I got the pattern here. I think that I need to make some
My husband keeps calling him Slash because he says there’s a similarity but I just don’t see it. I mean, no one bothered to embroider holly on his damn hat. I was going to include a picture here of Mr. Slash for you to compare but it just interfered too much with the infinite, wholesome cuteness of Bo that I couldn’t.

So I guess that this is it, huh? I’m going to write soon – I promise. Just maybe not right away – not tomorrow! I have really enjoyed writing everyday even though you probably haven’t. Here are my nominees for the Roolalenska NABLOPOMEES:

1. WORST POST OF THE MONTH: Celebrity Crush Haiku – John Cusack – It’s not that I don’t love you John but it’s just not a very good Haiku. I think George’s came out much better.

2. BEST GLOAT OF THE MONTH: Thank you America! – this all still makes me smile!

3. CUTEST IMAGE OF THE MONTH: (not counting your’s truly up there) Anaconda Vice.

. . . . and drumroll please . . . .

4. BEST POST OF THE MONTH: A story in which a daughter visits her Mother’s office and the Mother is thankful – I probably would have told you about this one anyway but it is such a good story that I have to award it something. I think this one also wins BEST P MOMENT but A P-Post runs a close second.

Thank you for reading!!

Put down the Snowman

When I started doing this I thought, wow, what a great opportunity to pull out and post some of my poetry. . . . crickets. I know, I know, didn’t happen. Most of it is stored on the hard drive of my old computer which lives in the guest room. My husband wants to give it to Besta and Far Far. I’m all for that but I have to get a couple of things off of there first – my poetry, some naughty photos, dancing hamsters and elf bowling (though Besta might enjoy that one). I’m still not sure when this mass transfer is going to occur. I don’t really write any poetry anymore. I’m not able to concentrate on it somehow. I used to feel like it flowed the easiest when I was really unhappy. I don’t know what that says about the result but . . . I have often felt that my attempt at poetry graduate school – one semester at Brooklyn College with Allen Ginsburg as my teacher – was what ruined it for me. It was definitely cool to be there with him and listen to what he said but it seemed like he liked the quirky cool boys the best and if you were a female you had default strikes against you.

I’d like to say that I was going to put down the snowman tonight and get up there and pull some stuff off that computer for you for tomorrow’s post but I’m not promising anything . . .

Moving on (soon)

Oiy, two more posts to go. I’ve really enjoyed doing this. I never thought that I’d make it. And now in honor of my second to last Nablopomo post . . . I can’t think of a thing to say! With this project ending I’ve decided to try and start this. I’ve already had to rip it out once which is the way it is when I try to crochet but I’m going to try to finish it. If it’s not a total disaster I really want to try to make one of these for P’s birthday. It’s just so darn cute and her last name is already Peep! What could be better? Well, it won’t exactly be better if I pull out all of my hair while attempting the crochet creation.
