In My Cup

I’m an unabashed coffee fan. I love my caffeine and need it/want it/crave it. Sadly I am not joined in this enthusiasm by my dear husband. This means that on the days we are not hosting my in-laws I am the only person in my house who drinks coffee. I drink one cup when I first get up and then fill a large travel mug to take to work. If I brew a whole pot then I end up pouring a lot of it out. I thought my problem was solved when I got myself a Keurig coffee maker and could easily and quickly brew up my favorite bold coffee one cup at a time. The drawback to this route is that the K-Cups you use in the machine are a little pricey. Boxes of 25 K-Cups run in the $9 – $12 range plus the cost of shipping. The boxes you can find at the grocery store usually only have 18 Cups in them and are pretty much the same price. In addition I feel wasteful tossing out 3 or 4 spent plastic cups everyday. I needed an alternative. I thought I had found my coffee salvation when I found a little “My K-Cup” insert at the store. You install the My K-Cup holder and cup into your Keurig machine and it allows you to fill your own K-Cups with your own coffee. I thought that my problems were all solved when I brought it home. Unfortunately I still await the answer to my coffee prayers. I have found my My K-Cup brewed coffee to be too weak and gritty with grounds. I’m still fiddling with the proper amount to put in it and the proper grind for the coffee. It is too much finagaling for my early mornings! It is also a bit of a mess to clean the insert of all its hot little grounds after each cup. After a quick internet search I found lots of other dissatisfied My K-Cup’ers complaining about a lot of the same things. I’m coming to think that the Keurig people intentionally put out an inferior product. The instructions tell you to not tamp the coffee down into the cup, only fill it to 2/3’s full and to use a coarser grind of coffee. None of these tips seem to follow logic especially if you take apart a store bought K-Cup and see that not only does it have a false bottom half way up the cup, it is packed to the top with finely ground coffee. There is no way that you can replicate this at home. They want to make it seem like they’re responding to users desire to have a cheaper, greener way to use their machines but they really don’t. They want us to keep on buying their expensive K-Cups so they put out a crappy alternative that any sentient being would ultimately lose patience with. Mwah-hah-hah-haaaa!

We have a regular coffee maker but it is not a very high quality one and I worry about what is leaching out of the cheap plastic filter into my coffee whenever I use it. This is pathetic but I’m so spoiled by the speed of my Keurig that waiting for even a small pot of coffee to brew on the regular machine feels like torture. What should I do oh Internets? I want to save money but I need to get this coffee thing worked out. I’ve been deeply dissatisfied with my coffee lately and this is not a good thing. Coffee and I are friends! My caffeine intake is all out of whack and I’m left falling asleep on the couch every night at 7:30pm.

Have any of you used a My K-Cup insert? Did you have good results with it?

Halloween Preview

I’m really looking forward to Halloween tomorrow. I hope that I’ll be feeling better by then. I felt really good yesterday but somehow all that goodness evaporated overnight. Maybe it was the getting woken up twice to help P out with her bloody nose. The second time was right before 3am. I jumped out of bed because I heard her crying out. When I walked into her room I realized that it was a false alarm. She was sitting up in bed about to stick her finger up her nose. I told her to go back to sleep. She wasn’t even awake. I went back to bed but couldn’t really fall asleep again because that is when my coughing fit began. Oh, it was lovely!

P is going to be a Fairy-Cat. We have a furry pink cat costume and she’s putting her wings on over it. She is also going to carry her magic wand. She looks incredibly cute but that isn’t hard for her of course. She was all set to wear pink ballet slippers but now she’s lobbying for the furry pink slippers that I got for my costume. I don’t usually dress up but one of the managers has offered a $25 Target Gift Certificate for the best costume (to be voted on by secret ballot) and I’m going for it. Even if I have to spend way more than $25 to do it!!

I’m going to be Mrs. Devil who I’m imagining as the ultimate bad mother. I got a furry red robe that I’m going to wear over a red shirt, tights and shorts. I could also wear it over a red plaid granny nightgown I have which I thought might be funny because the nightgown looks very Mrs. Claus. I have devil horns and fake red nails. I’m going to carry one of P’s babydolls, Bennie, around with me. I have a little red top for Bennie to wear and I attached devil horns to his head. I was going to duct tape on a diaper but then G suggested to forgoe the diaper and just put duct tape over the “holes”. I also put duct tape over the doll’s mouth. I’m going to carry a baby bottle filled with coca cola in case the baby gets thirsty. If anyone asks I might tell them that normally I nurse him but I pumped for today. I have really enjoyed getting this little outfit ready. I feel that I’m sure to TAKE IT!

I don’t think that I’ll be posting tomorrow morning because I’ll be deep in costume prep at that time. I’ll see you again on Thursday when I start my attempt at NaBloPoMo once again. Wish me luck!!

Break the spell

P has developed a taste for sleeping in our bed lately. More here. When she was a baby we were so careful about this and she was sleeping in her crib as soon as she was too big for the bassinet. She slept better and we did too. Whenever we go traveling or visit grandparents we all sleep in the same bed. She doesn’t seem to like this too much. She tosses, turns, kicks and now a new thing – whimpers (great!). When she was younger it would only take a couple of nights to break the spell and for her to get used to her own bed alone again. As she gets older obviously it is not going as smoothly. Monday night she didn’t sleep well – she was up past 10:30 and only fell asleep because she was holding onto my head. Thankfully this was in her own bed. Yesterday at school despite being very tired from the night before P did not take a nap. This usually means that she will sleep like a stone but alas, not this time. She fell right asleep last night. She wanted to hold my head again but I told her that she didn’t need that, she would fall right asleep and she did. At 1AM she woke up crying and I stupidly took her into our bed. I know that she was exhausted but she didn’t fall right asleep – she whimpered for at least an hour or so even though we kept asking her to stop, asking her what’s wrong, etc. I didn’t want to threaten to send her back to her bed if she didn’t stop because that makes sleeping alone a punishment in that situation. What we have to do the next time is bite the bullet and bring her back to her bed and let her hold my head or G’s foot or WHATEVER and she’ll certainly cry and fuss and we’ll lay there awake listening to her whimper in her bed – and this will go on for WAAAY longer than it has before but we have to break the spell . . . or else I’m going to start whimpering.

Or, maybe I should just wait until after Thanksgiving – that’s going to be potentially 3 nights in a row of togetherness at my sister-in-law’s and then back to my mother-in-law’s. Oiy!!!!!!

Anaconda Vice

I don’t know what was up with P last night but it definitely wasn’t overt sleepiness. We had quite a bath – it quickly digressed into a screaming bath. When P was younger she HATED her bath and would scream from start to finish. Lately she’s been enjoying them. We’ve even been doing bubble bath. Last night when she came in the bathroom and saw the bubbly water she started whining that she didn’t want bubbles tonight. It was too late and besides I thought that she was just being contrary. Boy, was she contrary!! Anyhoo, after her bath she shrieked at me in her room for about 20 minutes about how she wanted to have another bath. She literally couldn’t calm herself down. I ended up having to just hold her. So, I thought that she’d be tired for bedtime after all that but I was so wrong. She seemed tired as I tucked her in at 8:30 but she never fell asleep. G came home and went upstairs to her room. That usually does it but she still didn’t fall asleep. So, when she still wasn’t asleep when he went to bed he let her come in our bed. Great idea! Her favorite way to sleep in our bed is to hold me in a Anaconda Vice. Usually she’ll fall asleep pretty quickly after she establishes the proper chin hold but not last night. She didn’t fall asleep until after 12:30 sometime . . . oiy! What a day she’s going to have at school. What a day us grownups are going to have . . . it might be a day to make my triumphant return to coffee.
